 Maths Vision

Our vision is to broaden children's knowledge, understanding and love of mathematics and how it is used in the wider world; making real life connections. We believe it is important that children demonstrate a competence and increased confidence in demonstrating a range of mathematical concepts, methods and skills, expanding on previous knowledge. We want children to be able to apply their mathematical skills across a range of topics and subjects, illustrating the importance of their learning. We think it is important that all children foster an ability to solve problems, reason, think logically and demonstrate a resilient attitude to prepare them for not only difficult mathematical questions but real-life situations too.

If you looked at my university degrees—an MBA, political science, and English literature—you might not immediately peg me as a Maths Lead. But I’ve always believed that the most exciting paths are the ones that loop and bend. Behind my title is someone who simply never stopped being curious about how the world hangs together, and who discovered a profound passion for mathematics later in life.

That curiosity started early. Growing up in the Czech Republic, I was the kid who was completely spellbound by trips to the planetarium, staring up at the stars and unconsciously falling in love with the massive geometry and scale of the universe. After school, I would head to the local laboratory where my mum worked as a chemist. Watching her navigate that world taught me to love the quiet, satisfying logic of data and systematic problem-solving. Even when my formal studies took me toward books, language, and politics, I still found myself sneaking into university lectures on ecology and renewable energy, fascinated by the math and statistical trends behind global challenges.

Because I fully developed my passion for maths as an adult, I haven't forgotten what it feels like to struggle with an abstract concept or look at a problem and wonder where to start. That is my superpower as an educator. I don't look at math through the lens of someone who found it effortless; I look at it with the empathy of someone who had to learn it piece by piece.

Away from the whiteboard, I am deeply fascinated by child development and brain science. Reading The Whole-Brain Child by Dr. Daniel J. Siegel and Dr. Tina Payne Bryson completely transformed how I think about education. I love understanding the actual neuroscience of how a child's brain matures, builds memory, and processes big emotions. It reminds me that when a child gets stuck on a fraction, it’s not just a math problem—it's a cognitive and emotional milestone.

When I took over as Maths Lead in 2024, my goal wasn't just to update a curriculum; it was to change how children feel about their own minds. Alongside an incredible team of colleagues, we’ve brought the "Maths Mastery" approach to life. Our classrooms are loud with "Maths Talk," messy with hands-on tools, and completely mixed-ability, because I truly believe every child can do this.

At the end of the day, I’m just a lifelong learner who wants to banish math anxiety and pass on the exact same wonder I felt under that Czech planetarium dome to the next generation.😊
