History Vision

Our goal is to embed a curiosity about the past within all children and to harness their natural excitement about finding things out.  Using a range of sources, encouraging them to ask relevant questions and to draw their own conclusions, we want to enable pupils to find out about the past for themselves. We aim to develop in pupils a secure chronological knowledge and understanding of local, British and World History.

One of my first school memories is of a Roman Day when I was 5 years old.  We dressed up in white pillow cases, marched around the school field ‘in formation’ singing a Roman Legionary song and then had a Roman Feast (grapes and Ribena) whilst lying on the grass under a tree.  I think that was the moment when I fell in love with History and since then I took GCSE and A level History and then did a 4 year teacher training course with a History specialism meaning I took some lectures with the History Degree students.

Children are naturally born curious and I firmly believe that this curiosity and ability to ask (sometimes endless!) questions should be encouraged to enable them to gain an understanding of the world.  There are many things that the past can teach us to help us to understand the present, and even give insight to the future - and that goes for History and Geography.  By teaching children knowledge elements, we can feed that curiosity and sense of awe and wonder thus developing a thirst for more. By teaching children the skills of how to find things out for themselves by interrogating sources and using equipment such as compasses, weather reading tools and maps, we can equip them for lifelong curiosity and exploration.  By encouraging an element of empathy for people in the past, and an understanding of the lives of others around the world, I hope that we can all become better people.
