Art Vision

Our vision for Art at West Byfleet Junior School, is to engage, inspire and challenge pupils creatively, by giving them the opportunities to develop their own knowledge about different art forms and cultures as well as to evolve their artistic skills through experimenting, creating, responding to and inventing their own pieces of art, craft and design work. We aim for children to produce art work which explores their own imagination and creativity.

Art Leader - Jemima Heatley

I absolutely love Art, Design Technology and being creative. I have always grown up around Art and DT. I have been inspired by my Mum, who is a Ceramic Artist and a Senior Lecturer in Design Technology and Art in Education. I studied Art and Design, Product Design and Photography for my A-Levels. Whilst training to be a Primary School Teacher I specialised in Art and Design.

My passion for Art and DT has led me around the world. I have had the opportunity to teach in Sri Lanka, Dubai, Latvia and Belgium and share my research around creativity in education and the impact it has on a child's engagement in their learning. My love for Art allowed me to be a Camp Counsellor at a summer camp in Massachusetts, America where I taught pottery to children aged 7 - 16 years old.

Currently, I am studying a Master's in Education. To better my own teaching knowledge and practice, I am carrying out research around the Arts and creativity in Education. I have researched into Decision Based Art Education, where the children have choice in their own Art and how this increases their enjoyment and passion. I have also extensively researched into how The Arts, DT and creativity benefit children’s mental health and well-being.

Art and DT give children the opportunity to explore, discover and develop thinking skills, communicate efficiently and increase their confidence.
