What’s happening?

Wear something red
Pupils are invited to add a red accessory to their PE kit – anything from socks to hair ribbons. We kindly ask for a £1 donation (or more if families wish – please only donate what you can) to support Comic Relief, which helps children living in poverty both in the UK and around the world.

Red themed tuck shop
A special red-themed tuck shop will be available, including limited-edition jammy toast, with all items priced at 50p.
Year 3 will have their own tuck shop and donation box on Monday.

Joke sharing fun
Our school council boys will be collecting and sharing jokes at break time, with the best ones displayed by the dining hall. Year 3 will take part in their own session on Monday.

The chicks will support our science learning this half-term, from thinking about animal skeletons in Year 3 through to classification in Year 6, as well as brightening our days as a sure sign of Spring! Children have been observing the hatching process, and will now get to see their growth over the next week when they visit each class.

The chicks will be in school until the 6^th March.

We have an exciting half-term ahead, with lots of engaging learning and special activities planned. We’re looking forward to seeing the progress the children will make and the fantastic work they will produce.

We look forward to welcoming the children back to school on Tuesday 24 February.

It’s a great way for children to connect with nature, learn about wildlife, and contribute to an important conservation effort. The data collected will help the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) track bird populations and protect their natural habitats.

Harvest is always a valued time at WBJS. It's an opportunity for pupils to reflect, show kindness, and think about the needs of others.

On Monday 22nd September, West Byfleet Junior School will be taking part in World Car Free Day. This is a fantastic opportunity for us to encourage more sustainable travel and raise awareness about the impact of car use on our environment.

We are asking families, where possible, to leave the car at home and walk, cycle, scoot, or use public transport for the journey to school. Not only does this help reduce pollution and traffic around the school, but it also promotes a healthy, safer, active start to the day for our children.

We understand that not everyone lives within walking distance, so if you do need to drive, we encourage you to park a little further away and walk the last part of the journey together.

Thank you for supporting this initiative and helping our school community take a small but meaningful step towards a greener future.

Just for one day: encourage your families to leave the car at home and travel in another way!

We are very much looking forward to welcoming everyone back to school tomorrow, with the usual start and finish times (gates open 8.30 - 8.45 in the morning, and 3.15 in the afternoon ready for collection at 3.20).

PE Days and Uniform

Our PE days will continue to be Wednesdays and Fridays, but we will not have PE on the first day back so children should wear school uniform. In the first half term, you can choose between summer or autumn/spring uniform depending on the weather, and we'll revert fully to autumn/spring uniform after half term.

We look forward to welcoming all pupils back on Friday 5 September for the start of the Autumn Term.

This year’s theme is ‘Story Garden – Adventures in Nature and the Great Outdoors’, which aims to spark children’s imagination and inspire a love of reading through nature-based storytelling.

The challenge is open to all primary-aged children (though older pupils can join too!), and it launches on Saturday 5 July, running through to Saturday 13 September.

Children are encouraged to read up to six books over the summer to earn rewards, including a certificate and a wristband.

Children will need to be a member of the library to sign up for the challenge, but joining the library does not take long and is free.

🎭 Shrek Jr. The Musical
Our talented Year 6 students are taking to the stage for their production of Shrek Jr. The Musical!
Performances will take place on:

• Wednesday 16 July – 13:30 to 15:00

• Thursday 17 July – 18:30 to 20:00
   

🎉Year 6 Leavers' Party
To top off the week, we'll be holding the Year 6 Leavers' Party on the school field after school on Friday 18 July. It's a chance for students to celebrate their time at primary school with friends, music, games and plenty of memories.

Let’s make this a week to remember!

We’ve been made aware of a wasps’ nest in the brambles near the tennis courts on the rec. A pupil was recently stung multiple times while playing there after school.

The incident has been reported to the local authority for urgent removal. We’ve also passed on reports of a possible second nest in the park next to the school.

In the meantime, please avoid these areas and supervise children closely.

With high temperatures expected, the school has introduced several measures to help keep children comfortable and safe.

On Thursday 10 July and Monday 14 July, pupils may wear either their summer uniform or PE kit. On Friday 11 July, all children should wear their PE kit as usual.

Additional steps include:

• Use of air-conditioned classrooms during lunch and on a rotation in the afternoons

• Fans and closed blinds in all classrooms

• Encouraging use of shaded areas during breaks

• Frequent reminders to stay hydrated

Parents are kindly reminded to:

• Apply suncream before school

• Send a water bottle

• Provide a hat for sun protection

This can be an unnerving time for some children, so meeting their new teacher and spending time in their new classroom, along with other children who will also be in that class, is a lovely way to prepare them for the future and reduce any worries that they might have.

Throughout the day, classes will also be taking part in interactive games and outdoor maths activities, helping to show how maths connects to the world around us in fun and practical ways.

Don’t forget – the Battle of the Bands wraps up today at 5pm, so there’s still time to contribute to your class's total after school. The winning class will enjoy an extra break on Friday!
