Homework

YEAR 5: HOMEWORK

Reading

The most effective way to help your child improve their literacy skills is to hear them read on a regular basis.  Even the best readers benefit from being listened to, as it gives them the opportunity to discuss the content of their book as well as check the meaning of unfamiliar words in order to increase their vocabulary.  Our reading scheme enables every child to follow a carefully monitored programme.

Of course alongside our reading scheme books, we would encourage children to read other material of their own choosing and this should be entered at the back of the Reading Record Book so we can check that children are getting a varied diet rather than sticking to one particular type of book or one particular author.

All we ask is that the scheme book is read at least 3 times a week to an adult with the number of pages covered entered into the Record Book together with the date, your initials and any comments you would like to add regarding fluency.

Any child reading the scheme book to an adult on 5 separate occasions in a single week will have their name entered into our regular prize draw and should this occur 5 times in any half term, then the child will receive a Bronze Certificate.

Spellings

Each Wednesday a list of spellings will be brought home by your child for them to learn ready for a test the following Wednesday.  Please check the meanings of these words are clearly understood.

Tables

Each Wednesday children will be asked to learn specific tables for a test the following week.  It is so important for them to make a real effort to do this and your help would be greatly appreciated here.  Please say: once 5 is 5, two 5s are 10, three 5s are fifteen, etc. and then practise mixing them up e.g. seven 5s, four 5s, etc.  It is not helpful to learn a table as: 5, 10, 15, etc.

Tasks

Alongside the reading and learning of spellings and tables, there will be three main tasks to complete each week.  As a general rule, these tasks will be set on a Wednesday and be due in the following Monday.  Just ONE book is used for ALL homework, so we would ask that you please ensure your child completes tasks on time to give teachers the chance to check the work prior to the next tasks going out.

The final task could be topic-related or involve a grammar exercise.  It could also take the form of research or finishing off a piece of work.  To keep you informed, each child will be given a weekly homework overview sheet to stick in their book and tick as tasks are completed.

Whilst endeavouring to keep to the above plan, we recognise there may be occasions when slight alterations are necessary and trust you will understand.
