PSHE and RSHE Vision

Through the relevant and age appropriate PSHE/RSHE curriculum at West Byfleet Junior School, our core vision is to empower our pupils to have control over their own life as they navigate the modern world, through building personal responsibility, self-confidence and assertiveness.

We develop pupils’ understanding of issues relating to their own health, personal care, sexual development, relationships and associated vocabulary, which will enable them to make informed choices. In addition to this, we provide pupils with strategies to maintain personal wellbeing, promote resilience and equip pupils with skills to keep themselves and others safe.

While recognising and celebrating equality and diversity, we believe in supporting our pupils to form appropriate, respectful and dignified relationships.

PSHE and RSHE Leader: Miss L Creedon

"PSHE/RSHE equips pupils with the knowledge and skills necessary to make safe and informed life decisions. It additionally helps to support children in their wellbeing and emotional development, giving them the confidence and skills they need to grow into healthy and successful adults. It speaks for itself – PSHE/RSHE is a highly invaluable subject.

I have always had a passion for understanding different people and the communities in which they live. Prior to obtaining my teaching qualification, I completed a degree in Education and Social Science, in which I researched and studied a variety of PSHE, psychology and sociology topics closely. Since the beginning of my teaching career five years ago, I have led PSHE/RSHE at two different schools concurrently. Being able to observe and oversee how the PSHE/RSHE curriculum was initially delivered across both schools proved useful and informed my vision of how PSHE/RSHE should be delivered at West Byfleet Junior School, with a pupil-centred approach.

My vision is that PSHE/RSHE is a highly dialogic subject, so content should be delivered in an engaging, relaxing, safe space where all pupils feel confident and able to participate. With this in mind, I believe a range of teaching strategies should be used in PSHE/RSHE lessons as appropriate. These include: circle time, role-play, discussion (whole class, small group, 1-2-1), visitors (e.g. workshops, productions, important people in the community .etc), stories (e.g. exploring behaviour and situations of characters), creative activities and pupil initiated activities.

I look forward to putting my passion into practice and working collaboratively with the school staff, parents, governors and stakeholders to create an outstanding curriculum that is informative, engaging and provides children with the tools to navigate the modern world." - Miss L Creedon.

PSHE/ RSHE Enrichment Opportunities

The Peer Productions Team visited Year 4 and 5. Through performance and interaction, the children learnt healthy strategies to improve their everyday emotional wellbeing and develop resilience. 'Star breathing' was one of the strategies the children practised using to help calm the brain when in stressful situations. The children additionally discussed the importance of forgiveness, and that it is possible to feel more than one emotion at any given time.
